Molarity is the amount of substance in moles per liter of solution. This calculator converts solute mass to moles using molecular weight, then divides by the final solution volume.

Formula

M = (mass ÷ molecular weight) ÷ volume in liters.

Example

Dissolving 5.844 g of sodium chloride (molecular weight approximately 58.44 g/mol) to a final volume of 1.000 L gives approximately 0.100 mol/L.

Laboratory note

Use the final solution volume rather than the volume of solvent initially added. For analytical work, use appropriate significant figures and the molecular weight of the exact chemical form, including salts or hydrates where relevant.
